Rick Romley's Bio

The Arizona Victims' Bill of Rights passed by voters in 1990 made Arizona the first state to have a comprehensive constitutional bill of rights for victims. Ensuring that victims are not revictimized by the criminal justice system is one of our top priorities at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

Victim Advocates are available to assist victims of all crimes prosecuted by the County Attorney's Office.* During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, our advocates helped over 42,000 victims get through the judicial process and on with their lives.

Roles of the Advocate

  • Assist victims of felony and misdemeanor crimes as they participate in the criminal justice system
  • Provide victims with notification pursuant to victims' rights
  • Strive to minimize emotional trauma
  • Strive to minimize secondary trauma
  • Assist with social service needs
  • Provide emotional support and escorts
  • Assist as a go-between for the victim and the prosecutor

Victim Compensation

If you have been the victim of a crime in Maricopa County, you may be eligible for victim compensation to assist you with financial expenses that you may have incurred.

In Arizona, victim compensation is funded by fees paid by convicted felons. The state, through local boards, disburses compensation to eligible victims of crime. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office Victim Compensation Bureau is the local victim compensation agency for Maricopa County.

PDF versions of the Victim Compensation Claim Application and the Eligibility Requirements are available for download.

Information concerning victim assistance and/or restitution can be found in two brochures:
